Is this tour available year-round?
Yes! We run this tour in every season, and each time of year offers something unique. In summer, you can enjoy bright days, possible whale sightings, and waterfalls flowing down the mountainsides. In winter, the fjord is a spectacular mix of deep blue water, white peaks, and crisp Arctic air. The winter months also bring stunning, colorful sunsets, where the sky lights up in deep orange and pink before fading into the Arctic night. And if you're lucky, on evening departures, the northern lights might suddenly appear, swirling across the sky in shades of green and purple, reflecting on the dark waters of the fjord—a sight that never gets old, no matter how many times you've seen it.
What kind of wildlife can I expect to see on this tour?
Aside from whales in the summer, you might see white-tailed eagles soaring overhead, seals lounging on floating ice, and various seabirds that call the fjord home. The fjord is a dynamic ecosystem, and every trip offers different wildlife encounters.
What should I wear for the Nuuk Fjord Cruise?
No matter the season, dressing warmly is key. We recommend wearing multiple layers, including a windproof outer jacket, warm gloves, a hat, and sturdy shoes. Even in summer, the Arctic breeze can be cold, especially when standing out on deck. In winter, extra layers and insulated boots are essential for staying comfortable.
Will we get to see icebergs?
Yes! Icebergs are always present in Nuuk Fjord, as they break off from the Greenland Ice Sheet at the fjord’s far end and drift toward the open waters. Sometimes, you’ll see them floating right outside Nuuk, while other times, we sail further into the fjord to spot them. No two icebergs are alike, making every trip a unique experience.
What makes Nuuk Fjord special compared to other fjords in Greenland?
Nuuk Fjord is the second largest fjord system in the world, stretching over 160 km into Greenland’s interior. The fjord is a mix of towering mountains, ancient glaciers, and deep, untouched waters. Unlike many other fjords, it’s easily accessible from the capital, making it a perfect way to experience Greenland’s vast wilderness without traveling far.
How long does the tour last, and what is the route?
The tour lasts about three hours. We depart from Nuuk harbor and sail past the iconic Sermitsiaq Mountain before heading deeper into the fjord. Along the way, we cruise past waterfalls, wildlife habitats, and melting glaciers before making our way back to Nuuk. The exact route can vary depending on weather and ice conditions, but every trip is designed to showcase the best of the fjord.
Is this tour suitable for children?
Yes! This is a great experience for families. Our Targa boat has a heated cabin, an onboard restroom, and plenty of space for safe viewing. The cruise is smooth and relaxing, making it a comfortable adventure for kids. We do recommend dressing children warmly, as they’ll likely want to step outside on deck to take in the views.
Will I see whales on this tour?
There’s a chance! Nuuk Fjord is home to humpback whales during the summer months, and they are often spotted feeding in the waters. However, since they are wild animals, sightings can’t be guaranteed. Even if we don’t see whales, the fjord is full of other incredible wildlife and stunning landscapes that make the trip unforgettable.
Will we step on land during the tour?
This tour is a boat cruise, and we stay on the water the entire time. The focus is on exploring the fjord’s breathtaking scenery, spotting wildlife, and getting close to ancient glaciers. If you’re looking for a trip that includes stepping ashore, we also offer tours that combine sailing with land exploration.
Can I stay inside the heated cabin for the whole trip?
Yes, you can! The cabin is warm and comfortable, with large windows so you can enjoy the scenery from inside. But we always encourage guests to step out on deck at least for a little while—feeling the crisp Arctic air and taking in the fjord views up close makes the experience even more special.
