Secrets of the Ice Fjord
The birth of an iceberg
Every iceberg in the fjord starts as part of Greenland’s massive ice sheet. Over thousands of years, compacted snow transforms into dense, blue ice. When chunks of this ice break off—an event known as calving—they begin their slow journey through the fjord, melting and reshaping with time.
Why the Icefjord is always changing
The icefjord is never still. New icebergs continuously break away from the glacier, while ocean currents and winds push them through the fjord. No two visits are the same—each trip offers a unique display of frozen sculptures, some towering as high as buildings.
Why some icebergs are crystal blue
The striking blue color of some icebergs isn’t just a trick of the light—it’s science. When ice is compressed over thousands of years, air bubbles are squeezed out, making the ice denser. The result? A vivid blue hue that absorbs all colors of light except blue, which it reflects back to our eyes.
Sipping from Greenland’s Ice Sheet
Water trapped in the Greenland ice sheet has been frozen for over 100,000 years—long before human activity influenced the environment. When we serve you a drink chilled with fresh glacier ice, you’re tasting one of the purest waters on Earth, untouched by time.
How climate change is affecting the fjord
The glaciers that feed the icefjord are retreating due to rising temperatures. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to minimize our impact by using fuel-efficient boats and educating visitors on Arctic conservation. By exploring this landscape with care, we contribute to a greater understanding of its fragility—and why it’s worth protecting.

Is this icefjord serenity tour available year-round?
Yes! We operate this tour in all seasons, but the experience changes throughout the year. In summer, the midnight sun bathes the ice in golden light, creating an almost surreal atmosphere. In winter, the fjord transforms into a world of deep blue ice, snow-covered peaks, and the possibility of seeing the northern lights on late departures. No matter when you go, the icefjord is always spectacular.
What makes Nuuk icefjord unique compared to others in Greenland?
Greenland has many icefjords, but what makes Nuuk special is its accessibility and untouched beauty. Unlike the more famous Ilulissat Icefjord, which is often crowded with visitors, Nuuk’s icefjord is far more remote. This means fewer boats, more silence, and an almost meditative experience as you drift through the ice. The fjord also has a mix of massive icebergs and smaller, crystal-clear pieces that you can touch and even taste when we serve drinks chilled with glacial ice.
Will I see icebergs on this tour?
Yes, you will definitely see icebergs on this tour. The icefjord is constantly fed by glaciers, sending towering ice formations drifting into the fjord. Some icebergs are small and translucent, while others are massive, with deep blue streaks running through them. No two icebergs are ever the same, making each trip a unique experience.
How close will we get to the icebergs and glacier?
We get as close as safely possible. Icebergs can be unpredictable, as they shift and break apart without warning, so we always maintain a safe distance. That said, you’ll still feel their immense presence as they tower above the water, some the size of buildings. You’ll hear the ice crack and shift, reminding you that these ancient formations are constantly evolving.
Will I see wildlife on this icefjord trip?
There’s always a chance to see wildlife in the fjord. You might spot a seal lounging on a drifting iceberg, completely unfazed by our presence, or catch a glimpse of a white-tailed eagle soaring between the cliffs. In summer, Arctic terns and other seabirds dive for fish in the open water. Occasionally, a whale might surface in the distance, sending a misty breath into the cold Arctic air. Every trip is different, and that’s part of the magic.
When is the best time to experience the Icefjord Serenity Cruise?
The icefjord is stunning year-round, but each season offers something unique. Summer (June–September) brings long days, golden light, and the biggest icebergs drifting out from the glacier. Winter (October–April) offers a more dramatic landscape, with ice-choked waters, snow-covered mountains, and the chance to see the northern lights on evening departures. There’s no bad time to visit—it just depends on what kind of Arctic experience you’re looking for.
How long does the Icefjord serenity cruise last, and what is the route?
The tour lasts around six hours. We depart from Nuuk Harbor and sail through the fjord, stopping first at the Sermitsiaq waterfall, a stunning cascade dropping from the cliffs. From there, we continue deeper into the fjord until we reach the icefjord, where we slow down and take in the breathtaking scenery. After spending time among the ice, we pause for a quiet moment, serving a cold drink with ancient glacier ice before making our way back to Nuuk.
Is the icefjord tour suitable for children?
Yes, this is a family-friendly experience. The boat has a heated cabin and an onboard restroom, making the trip comfortable for children. The slow, scenic pace of the cruise is ideal for all ages, and the towering icebergs often make a big impression. We recommend dressing children warmly, as they will most likely want to step outside on deck to take in the views.
What should I wear for the icefjord trip?
Even in summer, Arctic waters can be chilly. We recommend:
- A warm, windproof jacket
- Layered clothing (wool or fleece for insulation)
- Gloves, a hat, and a scarf
- Sturdy, warm footwear
- Sunglasses (especially in summer, when the ice reflects a lot of light)
Our boat has a heated cabin, but you’ll want to step outside to fully experience the icefjord.
Can I step onto the ice or land during the cruise?
This tour is entirely boat-based. For safety reasons, we do not step on the icebergs. However, we get as close as safely possible, giving you an incredible view of the towering ice formations. If you’re looking for an experience where you can step on land and see the ice from the shore, check out our Icefjord Bay Adventure or Create Your Own Adventure for a customized trip.
